My Experience As The Workshop Director Of IGNOU Workshop II May 2004

Report of the Workshop Director

IGNOU is conducting  its II year Workshop for its B.Ed  students from the 20th of May to the 31st of May 2004. It is a twelve day intensive workshop where the trainees are required to participate in a variety of activities ranging from group discussions and seminars to the planning of cultural programmes and an educational tour. .Regular attendance at the workshop coupled with active involvement in the multiple activities organized is an integral part of the evaluation of the students.

We are  living in a globalized world where privatization and liberalization have become the key words. As educators we are concerned about the changes that are being brought about and we wish to make a creative response to it.We are faced with the problem of training individuals who must be able to survive in this competitive world without compromising on the core values of equality, justice, and freedom which are enshrined in our constitution and which are central to character. As teacher educators involved in the IGNOU B.Ed programme we are aware of  the privileged position that we hold. We are responsible for the development of teachers who in turn are going to help in the creation of productive reflective , socially conscious citizens. We were reminded of the Kothari Commission (1964-66) who had said that the destiny of India is shaped in the classroom. Our challenge as teacher educators involved in the IGNOU B.Ed programme is to  create socially committed  responsible teachers who are equipped with sufficient skills in teaching , who have formed a positive attitude towards the profession and  have developed  adequately in different areas of knowledge.

The most important component of the IGNOU B.Ed  programme is the Workshop based practical activitites  where a trainee has to play the multi dimensional roles of manager  researcher and social worker..The Workshop provides the trainees with a suitable platform where they can interact with subject experts from different fields , ask for clarifications on various points, improve their teaching competencies as well as exchange ideas with others.

The Inauguration began with a welcome address by the Workshop director who thanked the management of St Xavier’s College,IGNOU authorities , and all the distinguished faculty for their valuable presence The workshop was formally inaugurated by Mr Nair Assistant Regional Director of IGNOU who emphasized the need for teachers to be flexible in  their approach and to keep abreast with the many changes that this competitive world is going through and make a conscious effort to update their knowledge inorder to keep pace with these changes. He also requested the trainess to improve upon their performance in the I st year workshop in which they had participated a year ago and told them that determination and sheer grit are the key to success and that they must try to keep up the motivation and zeal during the entire programme and Never Never Give Up”

The Workshop Director told the trainees that it was imperative that they attend all sessions of the Workshop and participate meaningfully and actively in all parts of the programme. She also gave the trainees some instructions about the component parts of the programme and the schedule that they would be following. She also assured them of the cooperation and support of all the resource persons and organizers and told them to feel free to seek clarification of doubts or answers to their questions as and when they would arise.

The various components of the Workshop have been entrusted to different resource persons with experience in Teacher Education and with substantial expertise in their respective fields.Approximately eighty seven trainees attended the workshop. The trainees were required to identify skills and competencies that  they acquired during their practice teaching classes, focus on selected problems in their special papers ,make some suggestions about areas in which future action research can be explored, exchange views on social problems, co- curricular activities , school administration, school library etc and provide adequate feedback so that we could consolidate the strengths of the programme and remove or at least reduce some of the limitations..The students were also asked to prepare a list of their problems relating to the finalization of results which were also submitted to IGNOU for necessary clarification and help.

The Seminar on Education as a Fundamental Right was a great success We were very glad to have Dr C.K. Ghosh the regional Director of IGNOU chair this session. The trainess actively participated by presenting well researched and thought- provoking papers. They explored internet resources . read reference material, visited libraries and N.G.O ‘s and interviewed different personnel involved in elementary education. They were a highly motivated group who even expressed a deep desire to work in their individual institutions in order to implement this fundamental right of the child in practice. An article based on the deliberations during the seminar will be written and sent to some of the well known educational journals. Some of the trainees readily volunteered to carry out this responsibility.

An educational trip to Science City was organized for the trainees and is a compulsory part of the programme. It is commendable to see how enthusiastically they had  planned and arranged for the day.It was  informative , experiential and educational. The wonderfully organized excursion with its every detail looked into clearly showed the dedication commitment sincerity and enthusiasm of the trainees. They worked together in cooperation and fellow feeling and this largely contributed towards the success of the trip. An innovation was also introduced in the entire plan when the trainees developed a feedback form which was distributed amongst all those who went for the trip including the facilitators themselves.. The data gathered from the feedback form was then tabulated numerically therby clearly showing the areas which required future improvement as well as the many strengths which would be consolidated in future programmes. The trainees had alos made a contribution towards the expenses for the day. The surplus amount is to be gifted to a person known to one of the trainees and who is suffering from lukaemia. .This act of generosity and sensitivity to the needs of the less fortunate is commendable. By doing so the trainees have given meaning to the idea that a teacher should be socially conscious, and take upon himself or herself the duty to reach out to the needy.and be an agent of social change.

Some of the students got together and formed a high powered editorial team under a dynamic editor who have taken  the responsibility to bring out a bulletin comprising of articles , reports which have been contributed by the participants of the worksho, the regional director, programme in charge, workshop director.every effort has been made by them to use their creative energies in designing the cover page as well as the layout of the bulletin .The bulletin is ready and it gives me much joy to invite you to read it.A concerted effort has been made to see that it was brought out within the stipulated time..It is their labour of love.

A Valedictory Session and a Cultural programme is being held on the final day of the Workshop. The trainees have been given the responsibility to organize various performances in order to make the day interesting as well as provide a fitting finale to the hectic activity of the preceding days.We are very privileged to have with us Dr John Abraham Principal of Scottish Church College whohas been so kind in agreeing to be the chief Guest

As Workshop Director I have held a  prestigious  position no doubt but throughout I have also kept firmly in mind the fact that with every honour comes a responsibility, with every right comes a duty and with every privilege comes the task to perform conscientiously and maintain high standards..I have enjoyed the wonderful interaction with all the participants as well as the love affection that they showered me with and the cooperation that I always got so readily from them. The success of this workshop goes to the meaningful and active involvement of each and everyone who played a part in it. I.would like to thank Fr P.C. Mathew S.J.Principal Of St Xavier’s College and the management for the support and encouragemnt given ,Dr C.K.Ghosh Regional Director of IGNOU Mr Nair asst Director of IGNOU,Prof M. Mukherjee the Programme – in – Charge for their valuable presence and involvement in various activities, the eminent Resource persons for their expertise and time, Pradipda for his help in  getting the classrooms ready and other much needed assistance, and last but not the least to each and every one of the students who have wholeheartedly participated in this workshop with commitment dedication and utmost sincerity.May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord be gracious unto you. May the Lord make His face Shine upon you and bring you Peace, Joy and Success in all your endeavours.

                                                                 Prof. Charlotte Simpson

                                                                Director of IGNOU B.Ed

                                                                Workshop II

Here I am sharing with you some of my educational experiences in some of the positions that i have held.I hope that you enjoy reading about it  as much as i have enjoyed performing my duties and responsibilities and through it learning and growing. I must say that i learnt so much from these wonderful opportunities.

TALK GIVEN ON WOMENS DAY

My Dear Friends

I begin sharing with you my reflections on the role of a woman as a professor in a college by thanking the god of Providence for the opportunities of Education I received for the possibilities that came my way and for the profession that I have been able to pursue.

Every gift accompanies with it a task. With every honour there is a responsibility. With every privilege comes a duty. Being an educator in a prestigious college of the city of Kolkata is not only God’s gift to me but also comes coupled with a task. The task for me in my position as a Christian professor is one of witnessing. I feel strongly called to be a witness to Christ both to the faculty and the students alike.

Needless to say the world today runs after power ,pleasure and the accumulation of wealth at any cost. What is important is to succeed .The means utilized to  achieve goals does not seem to matter. Corruption of values is rampant .Unfortunately these  trends have crept into many of the educational institutions too. It has affected both staff and students alike. It is said that example is more powerful than words.” TO BE is more precious than TO DO.”

In the above mentioned situation my first challenge is to be a good person, integrated, honest, value based and having the courage to stand up for what I believe in. To imbibe and be transformed by the values of Jesus in the Gospel is my life long goal.In short I want to be a true Christian and a true disciple of Jesus.

The second is to function as a Christian in my college. I have realized that it is not necessary to be a Bible thumper. Christian presence is what is required. I wish that people recognize in me  a disciple of Christ.. A presence of this kind- a presence that upholds Christian principles and values is prophetic: It challenges the lives of people without you having to breathe down their throats the  Sermon On The Mount.A presence as gentle as possible is non threatening and invites people to question their own value systems and their world view.

In this task the woman of today can play a vital role. Hence the third challenge that flows from the first two is to help young women of today to become free and to help them  to work for freedom of their less privileged sisters.

Without wanting to be offensive  and gender biased I ask the question that  has often been asked before. “Where did your Christ come from?

                            From God and  a woman

Man had nothing to do with him!

God was born of a woman

                       And am I not a woman ?

                       And are’nt we women too?

Mary sings the song offreedom when she realizes that she has become the Mother Of God. With Mary our Mother I too wish to sing that song of freedom on behalf of all women , women who are still in exile , still in bondage and longing with the pangs of childbirth  for that day of liberation.

To conscientize young women about their dignity , to appreciate the fact that they are women and to take up liberative action on behalf of their sisters who are persecuted , violated , humiliated and live in fear and shame is a goal I cherish and a challenge I wish to undertake.

Let me close sharing with you a CREED I firmly believe in

I believe in  a God

Of the womb

And breasts

Flowing with the milk of compassion

In times of particular need,

Who is not at all involved in writing rules

And regulations

who is not a stringent task master ,

who never wrote a creed

I believe in a God

Who does not enjoy

Or condone exploitation

Who does not set out to conquer

But comes to support

And serve

Who suffers whenever humanity suffers

Who dies a little whenever her body is violated

Mutilated, or handled with disrespect

Who stands beside and within us

Whenever we lose our nerve

I believe in a God

Whose Spirit survives

All forms of degradation

Who mediates hope

That rises above the limits of time and place,

Who is durable and vulnerable

Who sometimes shows a masculine mood

More often  a feminine face

I believe in a God

Who holds us all in HER everlasting arms

Who gathers us protectively

To the shelter of HER wings

Who binds our wounds, dries our tears

And promises us freedom

I pray………….

May God direct our going forth by making a way through the waters :

May SHE journey with us in fire and cloud on our exodus from exile

May  SHE shorten or wilderness wandering and bring us to the promised land of freedom for all

AMEN

Seminar on Stress Management conducted by the Dept of Education

                                   St Xavier’s College Kolkata

Introduction and Welcome

On behalf of the Dept of Education St Xavier’s College I would like to extend a very warm welcome to. Respected Fr Principal Fr P.C. Mathew,Respected Vice Principals Fr Pat Eaton and Fr Felix Raj and all members of the Managament, our honourable resource persons present here today, all our colleagues from various departments of the college and our dear students. A very good morning to everyone .We sincerely hope that you enjoy every moment of the seminar cum workshop on stress management which we have carefully planned and organized for you.The need for stress management in the current socio economic scenario of India is being deeply felt , although the need for it had arisen long before in the West and as the number of persons with mental problems is gradually on the rise.It is an undeniable fact that modern life has become enormously complex. The accelerating competition in every field of life , the continuous pressures of achieving , the growing unemployment rate and myriad other complexities of urban life are taking their toll on young and sensitive minds . The student community is probably the major victims of these complexities . The growing academic pressure added to various stresses of the outside world is putting these sensitive minds under severe strain. Hysteric behaviour leading to fainting in the examination hall , suicidal attempts, being drawn to drugs, indecent behaviour , use of abusive language, cheating  are some of the pathological manifestations of enormous stress that the student community is trying to cope with at home and outside..It is felt that stress management can play a role in eliminating or at least reducing this crisis with which our society is plagued with.As educators we are directly dealing with the student community and therefore it is imperative for us to make them aware of this therapeutic methodology. With this target in mind the dept of Education St Xavier’s College decided to organize this seminar. In short it addresses a very important need of our times.

I take great pleasure in inviting Respected Fr P.C.Mathew , Principal of st Xavier’s College to inaugurate this seminar and say a few words to us today
